ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ADVOCACY AUSTRALIA

We're a dedicated group committed to catalyzing change on a national level to safeguard families and individuals affected by domestic violence.

Our mission is clear: advocating for legislative reforms that prioritise the safety and well-being of domestic violence victims and their families.

Victim-led. Victim-run. Victim-centered.

These aren’t just words; they’re the guiding principles that shape everything we do. Together, we aim to reshape policies and perceptions to build a safer, more compassionate future for all.

Our goal

To see post-crisis healing, recovery, & reform happen now. We’re dedicated to ensuring that survivors not only find safety but also receive the support they need to heal and thrive beyond the crisis.

At DVA Australia, we stand in solidarity with victims of Family Domestic Violence.

We’re not just advocates; we’re a community of survivors, supporters, and allies working hand in hand to empower those affected and amplify their voices.

Family Court is the most unsafe place for victims and co-victims (children) of family violence

Too often the Family Court which is the only judicial system in Australia with gag laws punishable by jail, zero transparency in their closed court settings and no appellable court places children with perpetrators, who in a surprise to no one the perp continues to abuse the children and their primary victim.

If we are serious about ending family violence in Australia, it is imperative that this court is the place to begin. We know family violence is perpetuated by a cycle, it is time to change the story for these children by ending the silence and secrecy that shrouds family courts and give real, lasting protections to victims.

Our survey is designed to capture the experiences of those who used the family court and also those who for various reasons could not. We know victims often stay with their abuser for fear of this system, we know perpetrators use the system to continue their abuse and that far too often the system gets it wrong. Family Court data is not readily accessible, nor do they track the lasting harms they cause.

Please complete the survey, send it to your networks, share it with your community and help us shine a light through the lived experience of this system which is letting child victims down, every single day.

Our last petition reason

Our National Plan is not working and the rates of Family Domestic Violence homicide, rates of sexual violence and drivers of domestic and gendered violence are clearly not understood by Government. We demand a National Royal Commission into the drivers of gendered violence, including the abject failure to see children as victims of domestic abuse and a focus on perpetrator consequences, accountability, rehabilitation and prevention.

We know on average one perpetrator has up to five victims. We did not call for a National Royal Commission at the expense of the immediate priority or need to invest in keeping women and children safe. We can do both of these things.

Our ask came directly from survivors of family violence and victims of family violence homicide.
